The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the leading organization for applied research in Europe. Its research activities are conducted by 67 institutes and research units at locations throughout Germany. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft employs a staff of more than 24,000, who work with an annual research budget totaling 2.1 billion euros. Of this sum, more than 1.8 billion euros is generated through contract research. More than 70 percent of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s contract research revenue is derived from contracts with industry and from publicly financed research projects.

The Fraunhofer-Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation (Fraunhofer IOSB) has 450 permanent employees. The research group for Secure Networked Systems within the department Information Management and Production Control (ILT) deals with Network Monitoring, Security Monitoring and Intrusion Detection using OpenSource tools. Furthermore, there is a strong focus on Industrial IT, OPC/UA and security in “Industry 4.0” including the development and implementation of security concepts. Beyond that, ILT runs an Industrial IT Security Lab. Fraunhofer IOSB employees often act as IT consultant, system analyst and architect.
